The Federal Government has distributed locally made clean cooking stoves and home solar systems to more than 300 vulnerable residents of Ondo State, in a renewed push to promote self-reliance, support small businesses and expand access to affordable energy.

The distribution, held at the Dr. Olusegun Mimiko Event Centre in Akure, was organised by the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI) under its Sustainable Empowerment Programme.

Beneficiaries were drawn from the state’s three senatorial districts.

NASENI said the intervention reflects its mandate to turn research and development into products that meet everyday needs. The agency said the clean stoves would make cooking healthier and more efficient, while the solar systems would provide reliable lighting for homes and small businesses.

Minister of Youth Development Ayodele Olawande said the programme aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and is intended to strengthen the economy through Nigerian-made products. He said the initiative had also been taken to Kano, Katsina, Lagos, Oyo and other states.

Beyond the stoves and solar units, beneficiaries will receive stipends to support micro-businesses.

The government says the added support is meant to make the empowerment sustainable rather than a one-off distribution.

Olawande said the clean stoves would reduce the burden on women and children who spend long hours gathering firewood, while solar lighting would help students study and enable small businesses to operate beyond daylight hours.

The Minister also announced that the Nigeria Youth Academy will be launched on November 9, with grants of ₦5 million to ₦20 million for innovation and entrepreneurship. He described the Akure distribution as part of a broader national effort to place young people at the centre of economic development.

NASENI Chief Executive Khalil Halilu said more programmes are in the pipeline, adding that the agency will continue working with the Ministry of Youth Development to produce local solutions that create jobs and serve communities.
