The Ondo State Security Network Agency, codenamed Amotekun Corps, has uncovered an alleged self-kidnap syndicate operating in Akure North Local Government Area of the state.

The Commander of the Corps, Adetunji Adeleye, disclosed this on Monday while parading 53 suspects arrested for various offences, including robbery, attempted murder, conspiracy and impersonation.

According to Adeleye, four suspects were arrested in connection with the alleged self-kidnap scheme, which involved circulating false reports of abduction on social media in an attempt to mislead security agencies and members of the public.

He said preliminary investigations showed that the individual who initially reported the alleged abduction was allegedly an accomplice in the scheme.

Adeleye explained that the complainant led Amotekun operatives to a house where the supposed kidnap victim was eventually found, raising suspicion that the incident had been staged.

The Commander said the development underscored the need for members of the public to verify information before sharing reports of criminal activities, particularly kidnapping, on social media.

In a separate operation, the Corps rescued two boys allegedly abducted by suspected kidnappers in the Akoko area of the state.

The Commander also disclosed the arrest of 21 suspected illegal immigrants in Owo. He said the suspects would be handed over to the Nigeria Immigration Service after profiling and necessary documentation.

Adeleye assured residents, particularly farmers, of the Corps’ continued operations in the state’s forests to prevent criminal activities and create a safer environment for agricultural activities.

He urged residents to remain vigilant and promptly provide security agencies with credible information that could assist in preventing crime and apprehending suspected criminals.

The suspects, according to the Corps, would be subjected to further investigation before being prosecuted in accordance with the law.
