Ondo State has lost one of its most revered elder statesmen, Pa Reuben Famuyide Fasoranti, who died at the age of 100.

His passing was announced on Tuesday by Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, who described the centenarian as a patriarch whose life was defined by wisdom, integrity and selfless service to Ondo State, Yorubaland and Nigeria.

For decades, Fasoranti stood as a respected voice in the country’s political and socio-cultural affairs, particularly through his role in the pan-Yoruba organisation, Afenifere.

Born on May 11, 1926, in Uso, Ondo State, he began his career as a teacher and rose through the ranks of the education sector, serving in institutions including Oyemekun Grammar School, Iju-Itaogbolu Grammar School and Christ’s School, Ado-Ekiti, where he became principal.

Beyond the classroom, Fasoranti established schools to expand access to education in Ondo State, leaving a lasting imprint on the state’s educational development.

His public service also extended into politics. A disciple of the late nationalist, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, he was associated with the progressive political tradition and played an active role in the political development of the old Western Region and Ondo State.

Fasoranti served as Ondo State Commissioner for Finance between 1979 and 1983 under the administration of the late Governor Michael Adekunle Ajasin.
In later years, he became one of the leading voices in Afenifere, championing Yoruba interests while advocating good governance, restructuring and democratic principles.

Governor Aiyedatiwa said the late elder statesman’s counsel, fatherly guidance and principled positions on justice and good governance would be sorely missed.

He noted that Fasoranti lived a fulfilled life and left indelible footprints of honour and service for generations to emulate.

The governor commiserated with the Fasoranti family, the people of Akure Kingdom and the entire state, praying for the peaceful repose of his soul and strength for those left behind.
