Nigeria’s U-17 women’s national team, the Flamingos, will on Tuesday, October 20, face Puerto Rico in a crucial Group B encounter at the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco, as they seek to recover from their opening-match defeat to Poland.

The Flamingos began their campaign with a 2–1 loss to Poland on Saturday, despite a spirited performance in the closing stages. Poland took the lead in the 33rd minute through Wiktoria Skrzypczak, who converted a penalty, before Natalia Skrok doubled the advantage in the 65th minute. Nigeria’s Oluebube Umejiaku reduced the deficit in the 79th minute, but the team could not find an equaliser.

The defeat has increased the pressure on Coach Akeem Busari and his players to secure maximum points against Puerto Rico. Nigeria will need to improve their defensive organisation and finishing while maintaining the attacking determination displayed against Poland. With defending champions Korea DPR also in Group B, Tuesday’s encounter presents an important opportunity for the Flamingos to revive their hopes of advancing to the knockout stage.
