For years, residents of several neighbourhoods in Akure, the Ondo State capital, lived with the daily burden of poor access roads, drainage challenges and difficult movement from one part of the city to another.

That experience is gradually changing as the Ondo State Government constructs link roads across parts of the city, improving connectivity and easing movement for residents and businesses.

From Igison community in Akure South Local Government Area to Ijemikin, Odopetu, Iwaro Street, Eyinke 1 and 2, as well as Ereketa, the difference is becoming clear as ongoing road projects continue to reshape movement across the state capital.

For residents of Igison, the ongoing construction is bringing hope of relief from years of movement difficulties. The poor condition of the road had made access to homes and adjoining streets challenging, particularly during periods of rainfall.

Residents say the project will make movement more convenient, improve connectivity and strengthen links between the community and other parts of Akure. For many, it represents more than just a road, but a pathway to better access to schools, markets, hospitals and other essential services.

Good roads do more than provide a smooth surface for vehicles. They determine how easily people can move, how quickly goods and services reach their destinations, and how connected communities remain to the rest of the city.

For businesses, improved road networks mean easier access to customers and suppliers. For residents, they mean shorter travel times, reduced transportation costs and greater convenience in daily movement.

The engineer handling the project said residents’ comfort remained a key consideration as work progresses. He noted that the goal is to deliver roads that will improve accessibility, ease daily movement and provide lasting relief for communities in Akure.

While commending the road intervention, residents also called for regular maintenance and proper waste disposal to prevent blocked drainage. They stressed that sustaining the roads would require collective effort from government and residents alike.

As construction continues, residents are hopeful that more streets across Akure will benefit from similar interventions. They argue that expanded road projects would ensure improved access to other neighbourhoods and further ease transportation challenges across the state capital.

As Akure continues to grow, the need for good roads will only become more pressing and takeholders insist that investing in quality road infrastructure is not just a matter of convenience, but a fundamental step towards building a more connected, accessible and prosperous state.
