Nigeria has won the right to host the 2028 International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) Africa Championships after defeating Tunisia in a closely contested vote at the African Table Tennis Federation annual general meeting in Morocco.

Nigeria secured the hosting rights with 23 votes, while Tunisia received 15 votes from the 38 certified voters.

The National Sports Commission (NSC) described the development as another achievement for Nigerian sports, saying it reflects growing confidence in the country’s capacity to host major international competitions.

Director-General of the NSC, Bukola Olopade, said winning the hosting rights for the 2028 ITTF Africa Championships and the 2027 Africa Para Table Tennis Championships repositioned Nigeria as a leading sports destination.

He said the achievement aligns with the Federal Government’s vision to shift from merely consuming sports to producing sports by hosting major competitions, creating economic opportunities and contributing to national development.

Olopade assured that Nigeria will deliver a world-class championship that sets a benchmark for future competitions in Africa.

Other hosts decided at the AGM include Libya for the 2027 Cup, Algeria for the 2027 Championships, Botswana for the 2027 Youth event and Nigeria for the 2027 Para Championships.

For 2028, Nigeria will host the Championships, Rwanda will host the Youth event, while Egypt will host the Para Championships.

The host for the 2028 Cup is yet to be decided.
