The Ogun State Government says the situation arising from unusual methane emissions in parts of the Ijebu axis is under control, as investigations continue into an incident that left several secondary school students requiring medical attention.

The government gave the assurance in a statement issued in Abeokuta by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Information and Strategy, Kayode Akinmade, following reports of an offensive odour in Ijebu-Ode, Ijebu-Igbo and Ago-Iwoye.

Akinmade said more than 30 students received treatment at the General Hospital during an assessment visit by government officials, while other affected students were reportedly taken to different hospitals.

Medical assessments showed that the students experienced symptoms including shortness of breath, stomach disorders and drowsiness.

Some required oxygen to stabilise their conditions, while others received less intensive treatment.

The government official said most of the students had been discharged by the time the assessment team left the hospital, while a few remained under medical observation.

The incident has renewed concerns over recurring gaseous emissions in the Ijebu axis, particularly in Ijebu-Ode, where similar cases have been reported since April 2026.

Although the state Commissioner for Environment, Ola Oresanya, had previously attributed the occurrences to natural underground gas emissions linked to geological fault lines, further investigations are expected to establish the source of the latest incident and its environmental implications.

The government has urged residents to remain calm as authorities continue to monitor the affected students and investigate the situation.
