The Presidency has dismissed allegations that the Federal Government is plotting to postpone the January 16 election, describing the claim as fake news.

Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, said the government had no plan to alter the election date or interfere with the timetable of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

“The federal government is not planning to shift the date of the election or postpone any election.

This is not in the works; the federal government is unaware of this, and this is just fake news as far as we are concerned,” Idris said.

His response followed concerns raised by the African Democratic Congress Presidential Campaign Council, which alleged that there were plans to pressure INEC into changing the election timetable.

The ADC campaign council urged President Bola Tinubu to distance himself from any such move and called on the INEC chairman to reject any directive to alter the date.

It also said any decision to postpone the poll on public health grounds should be backed by verifiable medical evidence and communicated openly to Nigerians.

The Presidency’s clarification comes amid rising political tension ahead of the 2027 general election.
