Nigeria’s Flamingos have advanced to the quarter-finals of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco after defeating Mexico 2-1 in a keenly contested Round of 16 tie on Thursday.
Oluebube Umejiaku opened scoring in the 39th minute, capitalising on a defensive error to put Nigeria ahead, while Mary Dunstan doubled the lead in the 70th minute after reacting quickest to a rebound.
Mexico reduced the deficit through Emily Delgado in added time, but Nigeria held on to secure a place in the last eight.
The victory extends the Flamingos’ impressive recovery after losing their opening group game to Poland.
They defeated Puerto Rico 2-0 before stunning two-time defending champions North Korea 3-1 to reach the knockout stage.
Nigeria will now face Venezuela in the quarter-finals on Sunday, November 1, after the South Americans eliminated Germany 1-0.
The Flamingos will be seeking a place in the semi-finals and an improvement on their third-place finish at the 2022 edition of the tournament in India.
