Spanish police have begun investigation into the death of Tenerife striker Jesús de Miguel that resulted from collision with FC Andorra goalkeeper Jesús Owono during a Spanish second-division football match.

The 30-year-old striker suffered a cardiac arrest after the collision during the Monday’s encounter and was rushed to hospital, where he was later declared dead.

The incident is generating reactions on whether the goalkeeper’s fatal leap in mid field could possibly be seen as criminal as investigators are examining whether the collision could amount to involuntary manslaughter.

Reports indicate that the prosecutor in Santa Cruz de Tenerife has expressed doubts about the prospects of criminal proceedings, as a result of the difficulties involved in establishing criminal liability for an accidental collision during a match after which Owono was shown a straight red card following the incident.

Football disciplinary authorities are expected to consider the referee’s report and available video footage to determine whether further sanctions are warranted.

The goalkeeper is said to be deeply affected by the tragedy and is facing abusive messages on social media.#
