Nigerian filmmaker and entrepreneur, Tola Odunsi, says his latest film, 19, was inspired by concerns over the growing involvement of young Nigerians in internet fraud and the social pressures driving the pursuit of quick wealth.
Odunsi disclosed this in an interview with Journalists, explaining that he decided to use filmmaking as a tool for social awareness after encountering young people who admitted to engaging in internet fraud, popularly known as “Yahoo Yahoo”.
The filmmaker said the experience occurred while he was counselling young Nigerians on their career paths. He expressed concern that some had turned to cybercrime because of peer pressure, societal expectations and the desire to achieve financial success quickly.
According to him, the experience prompted him to develop a story that would examine the circumstances surrounding internet fraud and encourage young people to consider the consequences of their choices. No
The film, titled 19, derives its name from Section 419 of Nigeria’s Criminal Code, which is associated with advance-fee fraud. The production explores the social and personal factors that can influence young people to become involved in cybercrime.
The story follows Ndubuisi Madueke, played by Stan Nze, a brilliant young man whose difficult family circumstances and desire for a better life gradually draw him into internet fraud. His encounter with a wealthy and influential neighbourhood figure changes the direction of his life, exposing him to a world where ambition and the attraction of quick money come at a significant cost.
Rather than presenting cybercrime solely as a criminal activity, the film examines the circumstances that may precede it, including poverty, unemployment, corruption, peer influence and pressure to meet society’s expectations of success.
Odunsi explained that one of the greatest challenges in producing the film was compressing the lead character’s 22-year life journey into a two-hour feature. Having also written the screenplay, he said he had to make difficult decisions about the narrative structure while preserving the central message.
The filmmaker, whose career began in 2006 directing music videos under the alias Bobby Boulders, said his approach to storytelling had evolved over the years. He disclosed that he directed about 50 music videos, including Naeto C’s Kini Big Deal and General Pype’s Champion, before moving into feature films and television productions.
Odunsi said he now pays greater attention to the underlying message of his productions, adding that his interest has shifted from simply entertaining audiences to telling stories capable of creating lasting social impact.
The filmmaker also noted that audiences increasingly demand compelling narratives, believable characters and emotional connections. He said Nigerian filmmakers must continue to improve the technical quality of their productions, maintain authentic storytelling and establish strategic international partnerships to compete effectively in the global entertainment market.
The film features an ensemble cast including Sola Sobowale, Bisola Aiyeola, Deyemi Okanlawon, William Benson and Ademola Adedoyin, alongside other Nigerian actors. It premiered in Lagos in September and was released in Nigerian cinemas on September 11, 2026.
Odunsi expressed hope that his work would be remembered for evoking deep emotions and leaving audiences with meaningful lessons long after watching his films.
The production adds to growing efforts by Nigerian filmmakers to use cinema to address social challenges. With internet fraud continuing to affect individuals, families and the country’s international reputation, 19 seeks to stimulate conversations about ethical choices, legitimate opportunities and the consequences of pursuing wealth through illegal means.
