The first rain of the year fell in Àkúré, the Ondo state capital, on Tuesday afternoon .
The rain which did not last more than ten minutes touched nearly every part of city.
It was a temporary reprieve for residents who had lamented the hot weather experienced in the last few days amid acute scarcity of petrol currently being sold for three hundred and fifty naira per litre.
However, the early year blessing turned out to be a source of sorrow to residents of Ipogun and Aladodo communities as over three hundred houses were blown off by the windy storm that accompanied the rain.
In ipogun community, eyewitnesses said the rain destroyed many houses, churches and electric poles.
Residents are now calling on relevant government agencies to come to their aid.
