No fewer than 50 athletes both male and female have gathered in Akure, the Ondo State capital to participate in the Sunshine Marathon.
The marathon scheduled for Friday has begun with the registration of athletes from across the country at the Ondo State Sports complex, Akure.
The Chairman of the Organising Committee Mr Benjamin Oladele in a chat with newsmen at the venue of registration said the purpose of the marathon was to shift attention away from football.
Oladele added that the programme is in conjunction with the Ondo State government, through the ministry of Youth and Sports to keep youths within and outside the state busy.
He assured that lives and property of participants are guaranteed as security agencies would be on ground.
“We have received athletes from across the country. We are doing this event to contribute our quota to the development of sports in our state and the country at large.
“There has not been any sporting event within the state that’s eye catching enough. The only thing people focus on is football. We wish to Promote fitness, healthy living among individuals.
“We also want to attract athletes and sports enthusiasts from across the country to showcase their skills.
“We believe it can also boost tourism in Ondo State, by showcasing its beauty and cultural heritage.
“Further community engagement and investment in sports, and encourage athletes not to give up in their dreams,” he said.
Some of the marathon runners expressed confidence they would emerge winners of the Sunshine State Marathon.
