As Catholic faithful across the world prepare for the funeral of Pope Francis – the head of the church, who passed away on Easter Monday, the Catholic Diocese of Ondo has held a requiem mass for the repose of the soul of the deceased.

At the mass, which was held at the Sacred Heart Catholic Cathedral in Akure on Thursday, Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of Ondo state described the late Pope as a leader who has left an indelible mark on the sands of time.

Represented by his deputy, Olayide Adelami, the governor noted that Pope Francis’ life inspired Christians and redefined the essence of leadership in the church.

He said, “Pope Francis’ remarkable papacy was marked by a profound commitment to the poor, the marginalized and the vulnerable. His message of love, mercy and compassion resonated across the globe, transcending religious and cultural boundaries.

“As a leader, Pope Francis inspired us to be better stewards of our planet, to advocate for justice and to embrace our shared humanity. The legacy he left behind serves as a powerful reminder of the transformative impact one person can have on the world”

The governor acknowledged the contributions of the Catholic church to national development as he commiserated with the church on the passing of the Holy Father.

In his homily, Rev Fr Francis Adebayo spoke on the late Pope’s simplicity, humility and passion for the downtrodden. He invited Christians to emulate the life of the late Roman Pontiff.

Appreciating the governor for his presence at the requiem mass, Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Ondo, Rt. Rev’d Jude Arogundade said the church will continue to partner government and other relevant stakeholders to carry on with the legacy of Pope Francis to end global conflicts and bring peace to the world.

The requiem mass had in attendance the Emeritus Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Ondo, Rt. Rev’d Francis Alonge, leadership of Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), as was well priests, religious and lay faithful.
